Beth’s 3 Accountability Tips
Community: Have some kind of group where everybody is focused on getting writing—critique group, sprint group, class, coffee date.
A doable, quantifiable session goal: Pick a small, clear target for this session (50 words, 100 words, write without stopping 15 minutes, focused work 30 minutes).
A story goal: Know what you’re trying to move forward story-wise (next beat/moment/scene/chapter, a specific backstory piece, etc.).
Beth’s Bonus Tip: Celebrate
When you’re done writing for the day, celebrate—it’s essential.
Celebrate what you did because you’re building the muscle; the more you acknowledge it, the stronger you get.
For me, celebration includes noticing what I did because I tracked it (a section, X words, X minutes).
I celebrate what I created—whether it was character exploration, backstory work, research, drafting a few words or a lot, editing a section, or making a decision that feeds the rewrite/edit.
